I Destroyed My iPhone Battery Using It as a GPS. Here is Our Ultimate Solution.

4.5 years, 115,000 km, and the navigation upgrade we wish we had from day one

We have been riding full-time since 2021. During that time, I completely destroyed the battery of my iPhone 13 Pro Max by mounting it on the handlebar and using it as a GPS, day after day, exposed to direct sun, heat, rain and constant vibrations. After three-plus years on the road, its maximum charge capacity had dropped to just 70%. In Thailand, with temperatures regularly pushing past 40°C, the phone would overheat within minutes of starting navigation, screen dimming, apps freezing, and leaving us without GPS on the road.

After testing three different navigation systems over 4.5 years and more than 115,000 km across 45 countries, we finally found the setup we should have had from the very first day: the Carpuride W702 Pro. Phone safely in the pocket or tank bag, a beautiful 7-inch screen under the windshield, real-time tyre pressure, Google Maps, Spotify, and a motorcycle that suddenly looks futuristic. This is our complete and honest review.

« Our record temperature was 52.5°C on the road. In Thailand, we regularly rode in 40°C+. The phone was simply not built for this kind of punishment, and we paid the price. »

Our 3 Navigation Setups, A 4.5-Year Journey

TomTom, Quadlock, Carpuride: what worked, what failed, and what we finally chose
Year 1, 2021/2022
TomTom Rider 550
Setup #1, Abandoned in Turkey
  • Dedicated GPS, no phone needed
  • Weatherproof and shock-resistant
  • Glove-friendly touchscreen
  • Sold as a « world » GPS but only covers 43 European countries plus USA, Canada and Mexico
  • Completely useless from Turkey eastward
  • No Spotify, no WhatsApp, no real-time traffic
  • Expensive for what it actually delivers
« We stopped using it the moment we crossed into Asia. The word « world » in its name is a very Eurocentric vision of the planet. »
Years 2 to 4, 2022 to 2025
Quadlock Phone Mount
Setup #2, Our longest system
  • Works everywhere, Google Maps covers the entire world
  • Charges the phone while riding
  • Full app access: Spotify, WhatsApp, anything
  • Compact and simple installation
  • Phone exposed to direct sun and heat, severe battery damage over time
  • Rain in the charging port triggers « liquid detected » error, no charging possible
  • Constant vibration risk to camera OIS
  • Phone unavailable for passenger to communicate or modify route
« A great system that quietly destroyed our phone. After 3 years, the battery max capacity dropped to 70%. Also, our Insta360 camera now handles all our filming, so the phone doesn’t need to be mounted at all. »
2025, Present
Carpuride W702 Pro
Setup #3, Our Forever Setup ✦
  • Phone safely in the pocket, away from heat, vibration and rain
  • 7-inch screen, Google Maps perfect even at speed with gloves
  • TPMS: real-time tyre pressure in 40°C+ heat
  • Passenger modifies the route without stopping
  • Compass, barometer, lean angle, altitude in real time
  • Live motorbike battery monitoring
  • Spotify, WhatsApp audio, Apple CarPlay, all wireless
  • Works on any motorcycle, anywhere in the world
  • Requires hardwiring if no USB port on the bike
  • Wires supplied without terminal connectors (costs less than €0.25 to fix)
« 30 minutes of installation and Falkor looked like a completely different motorcycle. This is the setup we needed on day one of our very first year. »

Why We Chose the Carpuride W702 Pro Specifically

The 7-inch screen, the TPMS option, and why neither the BMW model nor the base W702 were right for us

In 2026, the W702 Pro is the most advanced universal Carpuride model for non-BMW motorcycles. But within their range, there are meaningful differences between models and choosing the wrong one is a real mistake. Here is exactly why we landed on the W702 Pro.

Why 7 inches and not 5?

Simple: gloves. When you are riding with thick motorcycle gloves, a 5-inch screen becomes genuinely difficult to use at a glance. The 7-inch W702 Pro lets you tap forward on Spotify, zoom out on Google Maps, or check the TPMS readout with a quick look and a casual gloved tap. The 7-inch IPS panel at 1000 nits is also readable in direct Thai sun, something our phone screen never managed without overheating.

Why the Pro version and not the base W702?

The base W702 is solid but it does not offer the TPMS option. Once you have experienced real-time tyre pressure monitoring in 42°C temperatures, you simply cannot go back. The Pro version also adds dual Bluetooth intercom (a game-changer for two-up riding), a digital compass, barometer with altitude readout, and an automatic brightness sensor. All of these matter every single day on a long journey.

Why not the W702BS BMW version?

The W702BS is an incredible piece of engineering that integrates with BMW’s OEM Wonder Wheel controller. But it is designed specifically for BMW motorcycles with the original navigation bracket. Falkor is a 2014 BMW F800 GS, not equipped with the navigation bracket for that era. The W702 Pro works on any motorcycle, any brand, any year.

Key Features, What We Use Every Single Day

Beyond the spec sheet, what actually matters after 10 hours on the road
10
🗺️
Google Maps, Wireless CarPlay
Apple CarPlay via Bluetooth, no cable needed. Google Maps on a 7-inch screen visible at full speed. Nathalia can modify the route from the back seat while we are moving. No more stopping to re-plan the day.
Used every day
10
🎵
Spotify, Hands Free
Skip tracks, change playlists, adjust volume with a single gloved tap on the 7-inch screen. Safe and easy at 80 km/h. On a 5-inch screen it would be a risky fumble every time.
Used every day
9
💬
WhatsApp, Audio In and Out
Receive and respond to WhatsApp voice messages hands-free while riding. Useful for coordinating with local contacts, family check-ins, or other travellers. Voice calls too, through your helmet Bluetooth.
Safety game-changer
10
📡
TPMS, Real-Time Tyre Pressure
Front and rear tyre pressure displayed live. In 42°C Thai heat, this is not a gadget, it is a safety essential. Alert fires automatically below 1.5 bar / 22 PSI. Full deep-dive in Section 5 below.
Pro version only
9
🧭
Digital Compass
Real-time cardinal direction always visible. Indispensable on featureless steppe and desert roads where there are no landmarks, and useful in urban canyons where GPS takes a few seconds to orient.
Pro version only
8
⛰️
Barometer + Altitude
Real-time altitude display. On mountain passes this is pure riding pleasure: seeing 3,847m on the screen in real time. Also useful for weather prediction on multi-day routes.
Pro version only
8
🔋
Live Battery Monitor
The W702 Pro displays the motorcycle battery voltage live, giving early warning before you are stranded in a remote area with a dead battery. Particularly useful after long days with heavy electrical load.
Peace of mind
8
↗️
Live Lean Angle
Displays how many degrees you are leaning in each turn. Genuinely fun on twisty mountain roads, and useful feedback for developing smoother, more consistent cornering technique over time.
The fun extra
9
🌧️
IP67 Waterproof
No case or cover needed. We have ridden through Thai monsoon rain for hours with the W702 Pro mounted bare. Completely fine every time. Our phone would have been showing « liquid detected » within 20 minutes.
Built for adventure
9
☀️
Auto-Brightness, 1000 nits
Adapts automatically from tunnel to direct sun without any manual adjustment. At 1000 nits it is clearly readable in direct midday sun. Our phone screen could not manage that without overheating.
Pro version only
9
👫
Dual Bluetooth Intercom
Rider and passenger music sharing and voice communication up to 10 metres. Nathalia can now tell me to turn left before I miss the exit, in real time, rather than tapping my shoulder and pointing.
Pro version only
8
📶
5G WiFi + Bluetooth 5.0
Wireless CarPlay connects in seconds. Both my iPhone 13 Pro Max and Nathalia’s Samsung Galaxy Z-Flip 6 pair reliably and quickly. No cables, no adapters, no fuss. It just works.
Seamless pairing
Our Verdict, Carpuride W702 Pro
★★★★★

The Best Navigation Decision We Have Made in 4.5 Years of Motorcycle Travel

In 30 minutes of installation, Falkor went from a 2014 motorcycle to something that felt genuinely futuristic. The phone stays in the pocket. The screen shows everything we need. The TPMS keeps us safe. We did not know how much we needed this until we had it.

Section 05

TPMS, Why Tyre Pressure Matters More Than You Think in the Heat

Real-time monitoring that becomes non-negotiable at 40°C+

When the ambient temperature is 42°C and you have been riding for a few hours on Thai asphalt that is probably 60°C, your tyre pressure is doing something your eyes cannot see. Heat significantly increases air pressure inside the tyre. Without a TPMS, you simply do not know. The Carpuride W702 Pro’s TPMS integration displays front and rear tyre pressure live on screen, right next to the navigation. An alert fires automatically when pressure drops below 1.5 bar (22 PSI), the danger threshold for a blowout. On a loaded adventure touring motorcycle doing long distances in extreme heat, tyre health is the difference between a great day and a catastrophe.

Important: The TPMS version uses upgraded hardware and cannot be added after purchase. If you want tyre pressure monitoring, you must select the +TPMS option when ordering. It is not a retrofittable accessory. The standard W702 Pro without TPMS does not have this hardware.
  • Prevents blowouts: low pressure combined with extreme heat and high speed is a recipe for disaster. The TPMS gives you warning before it becomes critical.
  • Monitors overpressure: heat also causes pressure to rise. Knowing your tyres are at 3.2 bar when they should be 2.8 bar lets you release some air at the next stop.
  • Saves fuel: correctly inflated tyres use less fuel. Over long journeys this adds up to real money saved.
  • Peace of mind: knowing at a glance that both tyres are healthy, especially important in remote areas where a blowout could be genuinely dangerous.
  • Low maintenance: sensor battery lasts 1 to 2 years. The sensors attach to the valve stems and battery replacement is simple and inexpensive.

Installation, How We Mounted It on Falkor in 30 Minutes

Step by step, including the one thing the box does not mention

The Carpuride W702 Pro offers two installation paths: plug a USB cable directly into a USB port on your motorcycle (the quick option), or hardwire it directly to the battery using the supplied red and black cables (the permanent option). Falkor has no USB port, so we went with the battery connection.

The one thing the box does not mention: the supplied cables are bare wire ends, they come without terminal connectors (cosses) to attach to the battery. A quick trip to the nearest garage in Thailand sorted it: 10 THB, approximately €0.25 / $0.30, for two terminals. Or in our case, we simply repurposed the connectors from our old TomTom Rider 550.

1
Prepare your terminal connectors
If your bike has no USB port, you will need 2 terminal connectors (cosses) for the battery connection. These are NOT included in the box. Buy them at any hardware or motorcycle shop, or repurpose them from an old GPS as we did. Cost: a few cents.
Easy miss, check before you start!
2
Remove battery covers and access the battery
On Falkor (BMW F800 GS), this meant removing the side panels. On most bikes, the battery is under the seat or behind side covers. Generally straightforward, a few bolts, no special tools required.
3
Disconnect the battery, negative first, then positive
Standard motorcycle safety: always disconnect the BLACK negative cable first, then the RED positive cable. This prevents any risk of sparks or short circuits. The order matters.
Negative (black) first, always
4
Connect the Carpuride cables, positive first, then negative
Connect the RED Carpuride cable to the positive terminal first, then the BLACK cable to the negative. Route the cables along existing cable paths and secure with zip ties.
Positive (red) first when connecting
5
Choose your mounting bracket and install
Two bracket options included: U-shaped Extension Rod Bracket (clamps onto handlebars, adjustable 360°) or Square Bracket (adapts to various tube sizes, what we used). We mounted under Falkor’s high windshield with 2 screws in 5 minutes. The visual result is stunning: the motorcycle looks 10 years younger.
6
Power on and pair your phone
First boot takes about 30 seconds. For Apple CarPlay on iPhone: Settings, General, CarPlay, then tap Carpuride. For Android Auto, similar process through the Android Auto app. Both my iPhone 13 Pro Max and Nathalia’s Samsung Galaxy Z-Flip 6 paired in under 60 seconds.
iPhone 13 Pro Max and Samsung Z-Flip 6 both paired instantly
« 30 minutes of installation. When I stepped back and looked at the result, Falkor looked like a completely different motorcycle, almost futuristic. A 2014 bike that just got 10 years younger. »

Buy directly from the official Carpuride website. It is the only place where our referral link works, where the full range is available with all variants, and where you benefit from Carpuride’s direct 2-year warranty and 30-day return policy.

Our recommendation: get the W702 Pro with the +TPMS option selected at checkout. You cannot add TPMS later because the hardware is different. If you skip it and change your mind, you will need to buy a whole new unit.

If you are a BMW rider with a recent model equipped with the navigation bracket, the W702BS is the version for you. If you want the absolute best, with radar blind spot detection added, consider the 702RS Pro.
